Aristide Bruant by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Aristide Bruant

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1893

Historical Context

Painted in 1893 and now at the Hiroshima Museum of Art, this portrait of Aristide Bruant captures the celebrated chansonnier who performed at his own cabaret Le Mirliton on the Boulevard de Rochechouart, just below the Moulin Rouge. Bruant, who wore a distinctive costume of black cloak, red scarf, and wide-brimmed hat, became one of the iconic figures of 1890s Montmartre — a working-class champion whose songs celebrated and satirised Parisian street life. Lautrec made him famous through the powerful poster series he designed for Bruant's engagements, and the painted portrait continues his sustained documentation of this compelling personality.

Technical Analysis

Bruant's distinctive silhouette — the dark cloak and red scarf — provides a bold graphic contrast that Lautrec exploits to full advantage. The painted version has a different character from the more reductive poster imagery, showing Bruant's face with fuller tonal observation while maintaining the emphatic silhouette that defined his public image.
