Saint Catherine of Alexandria – Fragment of a Triptych Wing
Hans von Kulmbach·1511
Historical Context
Hans von Kulmbach painted this fragment of a Saint Catherine triptych wing around 1511, during his most productive period in Nuremberg. As Dürer's most gifted pupil, Kulmbach received important commissions from Nuremberg's churches and from the Polish court, where his work was highly esteemed. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters.
Technical Analysis
The fragment reveals Kulmbach's refined technique with elegant figure proportions, warm colorism, and the precise drawing inherited from Dürer's workshop applied with greater decorative grace.
