Propheten mit Schriftrolle
Bernhard Strigel·1493
Historical Context
Bernhard Strigel, court painter to Emperor Maximilian I, painted this prophet with a scroll around 1493. Prophet figures typically appeared on the outer wings of altarpieces or in the upper registers of retablos, establishing Old Testament connections to the New Testament scenes below. Strigel's prolific workshop in Memmingen supplied churches across the Swabian region. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Strigel's characteristic clear coloring and solid figure drawing. The prophet's scroll and dignified bearing follow standard iconographic conventions for prophetic figures in altarpiece programs.
