The Holy Family
Historical Context
Gian-Francesco de Maineri was a Ferrarese painter active in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries who worked in the tradition of Ercole de' Roberti and Lorenzo Costa. This Holy Family in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin reflects the devotional painting production of Ferrara, one of the most culturally vibrant courts in Renaissance Italy. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The panel displays the sharp, precise drawing and slightly metallic coloring characteristic of the Ferrarese school, with the intimate scale and devotional focus typical of paintings produced for private worship.
