Portrait de la famille Cuspinian by Bernhard Strigel

Portrait de la famille Cuspinian

Bernhard Strigel·1520

Historical Context

Bernhard Strigel's Portrait of the Cuspinian Family is among his most socially significant commissions, documenting the humanist scholar and Habsburg court historian Johannes Cuspinian with his family. Cuspinian was among the leading humanists of the Viennese court, a diplomat, scholar, and patron of arts who moved in the highest intellectual and political circles of the Habsburg empire. This family portrait, one of the earliest examples of informal family group portraiture in German art, combines the intimacy of domestic life with the public assertion of humanist learning and dynastic aspiration that characterized Cuspinian's extraordinary career.

Technical Analysis

The portrait follows established conventions of the period, with attention to physiognomic features and costume details that convey social identity and status.
