Hans von Kulmbach, one of Dürer's most talented pupils active in Nuremberg, created this devotional subject around 1519. The work reflects the artistic conventions and devotional culture of the High Renaissance period, when religious painting served both public worship and private contemplation across Europe. Now held at Museum of the Diocese of Rottenburg, it demonstrates the artist's contribution to the rich visual culture of the early sixteenth century.
