Shipwrecked in a Major Storm by Philip James de Loutherbourg

Shipwrecked in a Major Storm

Philip James de Loutherbourg·1769

Historical Context

Sailors struggle for survival amid a violent storm in this shipwreck scene from 1769, held at the Museum of Dieppe. The French Channel port of Dieppe provides an appropriate home for this maritime drama, painted during de Loutherbourg's last years in France. The shipwreck, which would become one of the defining subjects of Romantic painting, is here treated with the theatrical intensity that characterized de Loutherbourg's early approach to marine subjects.

Technical Analysis

Towering waves and a shattered vessel create the composition's dominant diagonals, with struggling figures providing human scale and emotional urgency. De Loutherbourg's rendering of storm-tossed water achieves remarkable textural variety, from transparent green depths to white foam crests. The dark, dramatic palette is punctuated by flashes of lighter tone where sky breaks through or foam catches the light.
