Bernhard Strigel, court painter to Emperor Maximilian I, painted this work around 1515 for the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. Strigel was the leading painter of the Memmingen-Swabian region, serving both the Habsburg court and local churches with portraits and devotional panels Bernhard Strigel served as court painter to Emperor Maximilian I, making him among the most sought-after portraitists in the Habsburg world during the early sixteenth century.

Technical Analysis

The panel demonstrates Strigel's characteristic Swabian clarity with precise drawing, bright coloring, and the firm figure modeling that made him the most sought-after painter in Upper Swabia.
