Riva degli Schiavoni
Luca Carlevarijs·1725
Historical Context
Riva degli Schiavoni at the National Museum in Poznan captures Venice's principal waterfront from the perspective of the lagoon. Carlevarijs established many of the viewpoints that would become standard in the Venetian veduta tradition. Carlevarijs documented Venice in oil on canvas with architectural precision drawn partly from his own engravings, staffing his panoramic views with animated crowds of merchants, tourists, and gondoliers rendered in small, fluid strokes.
Technical Analysis
The waterfront panorama extends along the Riva with careful attention to the succession of buildings. The handling shows Carlevarijs' characteristic precision in architectural detail.
