Dominican Cycle: Jesus before Caiaphas
Historical Context
The Master of the Dominican Cycle painted this Jesus before Caiaphas around 1512, part of the extensive Passion narrative that gives this anonymous south German artist his name. The trial before the high priest was a standard episode in German altarpiece Passion cycles. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows competent Bavarian workshop technique with clear narrative composition and the bright devotional palette characteristic of Dominican cycle painting.
