Christus am Ölberg
Historical Context
The Master of the Dominican Cycle's Christus am Ölberg (Christ on the Mount of Olives), painted around 1512 and now in the Bavarian State Painting Collections, depicts the Agony in the Garden — Christ's prayer on the night of his arrest, when he sweated blood and an angel appeared to strengthen him while the disciples slept. This anonymous painter, named for a cycle of panels depicting Dominican saints, worked in the Bavarian tradition absorbing influence from both the German and Netherlandish schools. The Gethsemane prayer was among the most devotionally powerful of Passion subjects, emphasizing Christ's human anguish and the loneliness of his approaching sacrifice. The Bavarian State collections preserve this work alongside other examples of the master's output.
Technical Analysis
The nocturnal garden setting creates an unusual light challenge: the sleeping disciples in shadow while the kneeling Christ is illuminated by the angel's presence. The painter handles the contrast between sleep and wakeful anguish with careful figure placement. The palette is deep and dark with selective illumination.
