Dominican Cycle: Pentecost
Historical Context
The Master of the Dominican Cycle painted this Pentecost around 1512 as part of the extensive Christological cycle for a Dominican monastery. The descent of the Holy Spirit marked the birth of the Church and was a subject of particular significance for Dominican theology. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows careful Bavarian workshop technique with the clear composition and bright devotional palette characteristic of monastic cycle painting.
