Piazza San Marco with Jugglers by Luca Carlevarijs

Piazza San Marco with Jugglers

Luca Carlevarijs·1750

Historical Context

Piazza San Marco with Jugglers at Sanssouci Palace adds animated street entertainment to the standard piazza view. Carlevarijs was notable for populating his vedute with lively staffage figures that gave his paintings documentary value. Carlevarijs documented Venice in oil on canvas with architectural precision drawn partly from his own engravings, staffing his panoramic views with animated crowds of merchants, tourists, and gondoliers rendered in small, fluid strokes.

Technical Analysis

The jugglers provide narrative interest within the architectural setting of the piazza. Carlevarijs' figure work, while less fluid than Canaletto's, adds valuable social observation.
