Christ Before the High Priest by Bernhard Strigel

Christ Before the High Priest

Bernhard Strigel·1500

Historical Context

This Christ Before the High Priest by Bernhard Strigel forms part of the same Passion cycle as the Pilate panel in the Walters collection. Strigel depicted the moment of Christ's trial before Caiaphas, a key narrative episode. The costumes and architectural settings incorporate contemporary Swabian visual culture. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with Strigel's typical angular figure style and strong local colors. The high priest's elaborate vestments and the architectural framing device demonstrate his attention to descriptive detail.
