The Bucintoro Departing from the Bacino di San Marco
Luca Carlevarijs·1710
Historical Context
The Bucintoro Departing from the Bacino at the J. Paul Getty Museum, painted around 1710, depicts the state barge setting out for the Ascension Day ceremony. Carlevarijs was among the first Venetian artists to document this spectacular state event in painting. Carlevarijs documented Venice in oil on canvas with architectural precision drawn partly from his own engravings, staffing his panoramic views with animated crowds of merchants, tourists, and gondoliers rendered in small, fluid strokes.
Technical Analysis
The ornate Bucintoro and its accompanying flotilla create a festive maritime composition. Carlevarijs captures the ceremonial pageantry with documentary precision and narrative energy.
