Children skating outside Fåborg
Peter Hansen·1901
Historical Context
Hansen's Children Skating Outside Fåborg (1901) is one of his best-known images of community life on the island of Funen — children at play on a frozen surface near the small harbour town. The Funen painters were unusual in their sustained attention to the ordinary lives of children and working people in their immediate community, and Hansen brings particular warmth and directness to this winter subject.
Technical Analysis
Figures are distributed across a pale icy ground that dominates the lower canvas. Hansen captures the characteristic awkward energy of children skating — bodies leaning, arms extended for balance. The palette is cool and clear, with the children's dark clothing providing contrast against the blue-white ice.
