A View of Faaborg. Winter
Peter Hansen·1900
Historical Context
Peter Hansen was a central figure in the Funen painters' circle, and A View of Faaborg. Winter (1900) shows the small harbour town on Funen island under snow — a subject he returned to throughout his career. The Funen painters were committed to direct observation of their immediate local environment, and Hansen brought a particular warmth to winter subjects, finding beauty in the spare, cold light and muted palette of the Danish winter.
Technical Analysis
Snow covers rooftops and ground in the painting's signature motif: the Danish town in winter quiet. Hansen works in closely keyed pale tones — blue-grey shadows, warm yellow-whites in the light — building the scene with confident, summary brushwork. The composition is simple and direct, prioritising mood over picturesque detail.
