Boys Bathing
Peter Hansen·1902
Historical Context
Boys Bathing (1902) belongs to Peter Hansen's series of images depicting the everyday pleasures of the Funen community — children swimming in the sea or lakes near Faaborg in summer. These images of informal bathing and play are among his most celebrated works, combining naturalist observation with an almost tender attention to childhood freedom. The Statens Museum for Kunst picture is one of the core examples of the Funen painters' social vision.
Technical Analysis
Pale summer light and the reflective surface of water define the composition. Boys are rendered with economical marks that capture movement and the awkward energy of youth. The palette is fresh and clear — greens and blues for water and sky, warm flesh tones for the bathers — applied with confident, summary strokes.
