Verkündigung Mariae: Engel

This companion Annunciation panel showing the Angel Gabriel by Hans von Kulmbach pairs with the Virgin panel at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The two panels were designed to face each other across an altarpiece or devotional space. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

The angel panel matches its companion in Kulmbach's precise Nuremberg technique, presenting Gabriel with detailed rendering of wings and robes in the careful manner of the Duerer school.
