Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist
Pinturicchio·1492
Historical Context
The Madonna and Child with the infant Baptist, painted in 1492 and now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, dates from Pinturicchio"s most productive period, when he was simultaneously working on the Borgia Apartments and accepting private commissions. The circular or rectangular devotional panel of the Madonna and Child was the bread-and-butter production of most Italian Renaissance workshops, and Pinturicchio"s versions are distinguished by their color and decorative refinement.
Technical Analysis
The composition arranges the three figures—Virgin, Child, and Baptist—in a compact grouping that fills the panel with grace and clarity. Pinturicchio"s handling of the Madonna"s features shows the Umbrian idealization derived from Perugino, while the children are rendered with more naturalistic observation. The landscape background shows the carefully ordered, luminous distances that characterize Umbrian painting. The palette is bright and harmonious, with the blue of the Virgin"s mantle providing the dominant color note.
