Madonna with Writing Child and Bishop
Pinturicchio·1495
Historical Context
Pinturicchio painted this Madonna with Writing Child and Bishop around 1495, during a period when he was one of the most sought-after fresco painters in central Italy. Born Bernardino di Betto in Perugia, Pinturicchio had assisted Perugino on the Sistine Chapel frescoes in Rome and subsequently received major commissions from Pope Alexander VI for the Borgia Apartments in the Vatican. His panel paintings, though less celebrated than his monumental frescoes, demonstrate the same decorative richness and narrative charm that made him popular with papal and aristocratic patrons.
Technical Analysis
Pinturicchio's characteristic love of ornamental detail is evident in the richly patterned textiles and the gold highlights of the bishop's vestments. The figures are arranged with the clarity and gentle symmetry typical of the Umbrian school, with soft modeling and luminous color reflecting the influence of Perugino.
