Madonna and Child with Saint Jerome
Pinturicchio·1480
Historical Context
Pinturicchio painted this Madonna and Child with Saint Jerome around 1480, during his early career in Perugia and Rome. The inclusion of Saint Jerome, the great Church Father and biblical translator, follows a popular devotional format in Umbrian painting where the penitent saint appears alongside the Virgin as an intercessor. Pinturicchio was establishing himself as an independent master during this period, having recently completed his training under Perugino and begun to develop the decorative, narrative style that would win him major commissions from the papacy.
Technical Analysis
The panel reflects Pinturicchio's Umbrian training in its gentle color harmonies and soft, atmospheric landscape background. The figures are modeled with the smooth, rounded forms characteristic of Perugino's workshop, though Pinturicchio's fondness for decorative embellishment is already apparent in the detailed rendering of costume and accessories.
