Madonna and Child
Pinturicchio·1494
Historical Context
Pinturicchio's Madonna and Child, painted around 1494 and now in the North Carolina Museum of Art, is a devotional panel by the Umbrian painter who was one of the most prolific decorators of the Italian Renaissance. Pinturicchio ("little painter") earned his nickname from his small stature, not the scale of his ambitions—he decorated the Borgia Apartments in the Vatican and the Piccolomini Library in Siena with vast fresco cycles. His devotional panels reflect the same decorative richness.
Technical Analysis
Pinturicchio's technique features bright, clear colors, abundant gold detail, and the decorative refinement characteristic of the Umbrian school, with smooth, precise surface treatment and careful attention to ornamental elements.
