Diptyque Funk : portrait donateur de Hans Funk by Bernhard Strigel

Diptyque Funk : portrait donateur de Hans Funk

Bernhard Strigel·1490

Historical Context

Bernhard Strigel, the leading painter of Memmingen in Swabia, painted this diptych portrait of the donor Hans Funk around 1490. Strigel specialized in portraits and altarpieces for the patrician families and churches of the Allgäu region. His precise, somewhat austere portrait style captured the prosperous burghers of the Swabian imperial cities with documentary fidelity. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel in diptych format with careful attention to the donor's physiognomy and costume. Strigel's clear, unembellished portrait style provides an honest record of a Swabian patrician.
