Mindelheim Altarpiece: Issachar and Susanna and their Childs
Bernhard Strigel·1505
Historical Context
Bernhard Strigel painted Issachar and Susanna with their children for the Mindelheim Altarpiece around 1505. These additional family members extend the Holy Kinship to its most comprehensive form. Strigel's systematic approach to the large-scale program demonstrates his organizational abilities as well as his painting skill. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Strigel's uniform approach to the holy family members, maintaining consistent quality and formal presentation across the numerous panels of the altarpiece.
