Portrait of an unknown master builder
Historical Context
Dating to 1470, the portrait demonstrates the portrait tradition that Master of the Life of the Virgin contributed to within the Early Renaissance. Painted during the flourishing of the Early Renaissance, the work balances individual likeness with the idealized presentation expected by fifteenth-century patrons. The mid-fifteenth century saw painting achieve new levels of naturalistic conviction, as artists competed to render space, light, and human expression with unprecedented accuracy.
Technical Analysis
The portrait is rendered with skilled technique characteristic of Master of the Life of the Virgin's best work. The tempera medium, applied in thin layers of egg-bound pigment over a prepared gesso ground, the subtle gradations of flesh tone and the textural contrasts between skin, fabric, and background that give the image its convincing presence.
