Die Entführung des Ganymed

Hans von Marées's Die Entführung des Ganymed (The Abduction of Ganymede, 1887) depicts one of the most frequently painted subjects in Western art — Zeus in the form of an eagle carrying the beautiful youth Ganymede to Olympus to serve as cupbearer to the gods. Von Marées treats this classical subject in his characteristic late manner: stripped of the Baroque dynamism that characterized Rubens's and Rembrandt's versions, reduced to the essential symbolic encounter — youth and divine bird — in a monumental composition that seeks archaic power rather than narrative drama.

Von Marées's Ganymede composition is organized around the central encounter of the youth's pale form and the eagle's dark wings — a chromatic and formal opposition that carries both descriptive and symbolic weight.
