Semi-Gods Ceiling
Pinturicchio·1490
Historical Context
Pinturicchio's Semi-Gods Ceiling, painted around 1490 in the Palazzo della Rovere, Rome, is part of the decorative program he created for the powerful della Rovere family. The ceiling features classical mythological figures painted in the grottesca style inspired by the recently discovered ancient Roman wall paintings in the Domus Aurea. Pinturicchio was a leading practitioner of this decorative style, which became enormously fashionable in late 15th-century Rome.
Technical Analysis
Pinturicchio demonstrates his mastery of ceiling decoration with the grottesca style, combining classical motifs, bright colors, and gold highlights in the elaborate ornamental framework derived from ancient Roman wall painting traditions.
