Seascape by Philip James de Loutherbourg

Seascape

Philip James de Loutherbourg·1766

Historical Context

The open sea under atmospheric conditions provides the subject for this 1766 marine painting in the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig. Painted while de Loutherbourg was still based in Paris, this seascape demonstrates his early mastery of marine subjects that would later flourish in England. The young artist's election to the Académie Royale in 1767—the year after this painting—confirmed the recognition his marine and landscape work had already achieved.

Technical Analysis

Sky and sea dominate the composition in roughly equal proportions, with vessels providing scale and compositional interest. De Loutherbourg's atmospheric rendering of maritime light shows the influence of Dutch marine painting as filtered through the French tradition of Vernet. The palette is built on cool blues and greys with strategic warm accents.
