Dominican Cycle: Noli me tangere
Historical Context
The Master of the Dominican Cycle painted this Noli Me Tangere around 1512, depicting Christ's post-Resurrection appearance to Mary Magdalene. The scene completes the cycle's narrative arc from Passion through Resurrection, appropriate to Dominican meditation on Christ's life. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows careful Bavarian workshop technique with the garden setting and emotional encounter between Christ and the Magdalene rendered in clear, devotional terms.
